What is the difference between a District/Municipal Council and the Local Authority (PBT)?

Answer

The Local Authority (PBT) in this country is divided into three categories, namely:
- City Council/Hall,
- Municipal Council
- District Council

City Council/Hall is a Municipal Council of a town that has been upgraded to city status after fulfilling certain criteria. The criteria includes servicing a population of over 100,000 and annual revenue of over RM20 million.

A Municipal Council is usually found in urban areas and governs a population and handles revenue bigger than that of a district. The criteria for a Municipal Council includes servicing a population of over 100,000 and annual revenue of over RM5 million.

A District Council is usually found in more rural areas, with a population smaller than 100,000 and revenue of under RM5 million.

How many Local Authorities (PBT) are there in Malaysia now?

Answer
145 PBT (including Kuala Lumpur City Hall), comprising 31 Municipal Councils; and 114 District Councils.Apart from this, there are also other bodies which are given authority by the respective state governments to undertake specific functions like: Kulim Hi-Tech PBT, Pasir Gudang PBT, Putrajaya Corporation etc.
